Description

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a 30 amino acid peptide hormone secreted from the gut endocrine cells in response to nutrient ingestion. GLP-1 regulates gastrointestinal motility and islet hormone secretion. In particular it stimulates insulin and inhibits glucagon secretion, thereby indirectly modulating peripheral glucose uptake and control of hepatic glucose production. GLP-1 exerts its action on gastric emptying through the GLP-1 receptor (GLP1R). GLP1R is 489 amino acids in mouse and 463 amino acids in rat and human. It is a member of the glucagon receptor family of G protein-coupled receptors which activate adenylyl cyclase. GLP1R is expressed in pancreatic islets, stomach and lung and has been suggested as a potential target for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes and obesity
